This page could also be called: Hire me!, or A Resume/Cover Letter In Bullet-Points.
I graduated from Smith in May ’09, and took classes at the University of MA for the 2009-2010 school year. Now I’m looking for a real job. I would love to work at a startup or other small tech/web company, and I definitely think I could bring valuable skills to where ever I end up. Depending on the job and how grad school applications go, I could also be available for the long term, too.
I have skills in:
- PHP/MySQL
- (X)HTML/CSS/JavaScript/jQuery
- Python
- Java [haven't worked with it in a while though]
- C/C++ [under duress - not a first choice language]
- I’ve been complimented on my clean code, so I guess that’s a skill.
- I’m definitely a fast learner and can (usually) easily make sense of other people’s code.
- I’ve worked on teams before [research project, web design job],
- and I can work independently [independent study, web deign job]
- (of the two, I prefer small teams with some independent work)
I’m interested in:
- Making things. Preferably, making things that look nice. [Not limited to computers. I also sew, mostly costumes.]
- In terms of web dev:
- Making mashups between existing services. I love when things have nice APIs.
- User-centric services, such as location based applications, or things like twitter and digg.
- Accessibility, since there’s not much point to having a site if people can’t use it.
- Data visualization. I worked last semester with Prof D. Thiebaut doing an independent study somewhat not related to data visualization, but it lead me to poking at his work, which is. And really? After spending a summer looking through thousands of lines of sensor data (another research project), that seems really interesting.
- Databases – MySQL is much more powerful than I first assumed, and I’d love to have a chance to do something with it.
- Open source projects [I haven't yet contributed to anything aside from wordpress through plugins, but I have tweaked programs for myself. I'm not sure what I'm waiting for.]
- As far as real research interests: Artificial Intelligence, Smart Environments[*] and Ubiquitous Computing, and anything that brings people and computers even closer together.
- I think encryption and cryptography are pretty interesting, though I could never do research in that field.
I have a real resume which shows my background, though I think this gives a better idea of my skills & personality. You can see it here. If I sound like someone you’re looking for, you can email me at kelly[dot]dwan[at]gmail[dot]com.
[*] I was part of a research project in this area in summer 2008, later, my group’s paper was published:
