I own two laptops and a 10+yr old non-functioning desktop. My first laptop, officially named Iron but referred to as ‘the big one’ is an HP Pavillion something or other, bought in 2005 with 512MB RAM, a 1.6GHz processor, and a 55GB hdd. I will eventually get more RAM for this one, as I’m definitely starting to notice lag. I dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04, and amusingly enough I can never get both to work smoothly at the same time.
I also recently (Nov 2008) bought a MSI Wind netbook (Cobalt/’the tiny one’), which is sadly more powerful than my big laptop with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, and 120GB hdd. It came with Windows XP, and I was originally going to dual boot, but due to impatience/technical issues, I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 on the entire drive. I only sometimes regret this. I also consider all the compatibility issues I had after installing Linux as an adventure rather than an annoyance – otherwise I probably would have thrown the thing out a window. I still need to recompile the wireless drivers every time I start up (yes, I could write a 3 line shell script that would do exactly this, but…). I may eventually get up a post about how I did it, because that seemed rather lacking when I was going through all this.
Of course, I also want to get another flavor of Linux on both big and tiny.
